  1. I predict that the North- West Mounted Police will face many challenges. The problems I think they will face are opposition from the traders and the First Nations people as there was never law and order. The First nations and the traders will be resistant because they will not want change. As they want things to remain the same.Since the traders exploited the First nations people by taking unfair advantage of them, when trading goods. While the First nations are used to the status quo where they make bad trades for whiskey. So the First Nations became dependent on the traders to supply them with liquor.

  2. What do you predict the NWMP may face in bringing about law and order?

The challenges faced by the North West Mounted Police are to stop the illegal traders; find people who broke the law and bring them to justice; establish and maintain a relationship with the first nations people; to keep the law and order in the Canadian Pacific Railway camps; to protect new settlers and perform active duties of a person in the public sector.
In 1874 a law was passed forbidding the sale of liquor in the Northwest Territories. Illegal traders would trade whiskey and sometimes blankets or a repeating rifle for buffalo robes, horses, and furs. The North West Mounted Police had to stop this trading before too many guns were in the hands of the first nations people or they wouldn't be able to enforce the law. The Northwest Mounted Police had a lot of horse thieves because there were more settlers entering the region , but they only had a limited number of men to cover the large amount of land called the Northwest Territories. The Canadian government wanted to establish a relationship with the first nations people, so they could negotiate treaties and put them on reserves. This would allow the North West Mounted Police to keep law and order because the First Nations people were not as spread out as before and they would have laws to follow. The Northwest Mounted Police had many duties to perform in the public sector such as firefighters, mailmen, councillors, and doctors. There were many duties to be performed by the North West Mounted Police. They needed be trained to know a little bit about everything in the public service sector, including peace keeping. in the Canadian Pacific Railway camps between the workers and the first nations people. Some of the main challenges were more men were needed to join to cover the large area of the North West Territories, they needed food, water , horses and guns for these men so they could do their jobs.

  3. What challenges do you predict the NWPM may face in bringing about law and order?

I strongly believe that the North West Mounted Police faced many challenges in bringing about law and order during their early years. One of the main challenges I think that the NWMP were faced against was to get the illegal trading in order. This would include tracking down the American traders that were trading liquor and ammunition with the First Nations People. I think that this would have been a very hard challenge that the NWMP were faced with. A law was passed in 1876, forbidding the import and manufacturing of the sale of liquor. A second challenge that I think the North West Mounted Police were faced with was to build a positive relationship with the First Nations People. This is very important to gain trust, as well as to negotiate treaties (for example, Treaty 7) and establish reserves. The third challenge I believe the NWMP would have been faced with is arresting people who broke the law and keeping regular law and order. Back then, horse stealing was extremely common, therefore they would have spent a great amount of time arresting horse thieves. Keeping regular law and order could have been difficult as well, due to the large number of duties that the NWMP were obligated to perform. For example, the NWMP performed many public service sector jobs. They also worked as mailmen, doctors ( to some extent), and fire fighters. As you can see, there were many challenges the North West Mounted Police were faced with in their early years.

  4. What challenges do you predict the NWMP may face in bringing about law and order?

The North West Mountain Police will encounter many challenges as trying to bring about law and order as the NWMP. As great of a job as the NWMP have been doing their has still been crime continuing to occur such as stolen horses. Also maintenance has suffered a lot more than the Canadians North-West in comparison. As well, the NWMP has tried to create new laws such as the forbidden liquor in the North-West territories and they have also tried to befriend the people. These two points have ended successfully and not as planned, witch was a little more challenging for the NWMP then they had hoped. Sadly due to these reasons, a few years later the force has reduced from what was 1000 men to now 700 men. As you can tell the North West Mountain police have gone through many challenges and the ones above are just a few of them.

  5. What challenges do you predict the NWPM may face in bringing about law and order?

I predict that these are the challenges that the NWMP may face.

    1. The NWMP had to keep law and order through all of the North West Territories. This was a challenge because it was a very vast area to cover with only 300 men.
    2. The NWMP wanted to stop the illegal whisky traders and First Nations who were part of the trade. In 1874 the Canadian government had passed a law forbidding the importing, manufacturing and sale of liquor in the North West Territories. In the same year the NWMP had apprehended 5 whisky traders.
    3. Later on in the 1880’s, horse stealing had been occurring more and more every day. So the NWMP had to capture the horse stealing criminals. The NWMP devoted a lot of time capturing the horse thieves that made it hard for the NWMP to be of service to the town’s people.
    4. In 1877 the NWMP prepared to help negotiate the First Nation for the treaty process, for the famous treaty 7. Under the terms of treaty 7 reserves were established for the First Nations. The task was to encourage them to move to the reserves and to assist them in adapting to there new life which fell in the NWMP command.
    5. In 1885 the railroad was complete. It took a decade for the Canadian pacific railway to be completed. There were 4000 construction workers in the rail road camps. The NWMP had to keep the law and order between the construction workers and the First Nations.
    6. On March 16, 1885 the NWMP received orders to protect the settlement in Alberta, even though the NWMP had very little to do with the resistance of 1885. They still had to perform all the duties as a police force. As a part of the NWMP duties they patrolled the North West to keep the law and order. In 1896 gold was discovered in the Yukon. These points would be the major duties and or responsibilities that the NWMP had to face.

  6. What challenges do you predict the NWMP may face in bringing about law and order?

    Answer:

I think that the biggest challenges the NWMP may have to face will be protecting the people (especially the Dakota), stopping the illegal trade and gaining trust of the First Nations.
The west was a dangerous place when the NWMP arrived. Laws were disregarded and horse stealing was common. No new settlers were moving in because of the danger. Also, the Dakota people that were seeking asylum in the west would also have to be protected. The NWMP would have to safeguard the people there and enforce the laws.
The NWMP was also dealing with an ungoverned group who were trading everything they had for whiskey. In 1874, a law was enacted prohibiting the consumption and trade of liquor and in that fall, they had made their first successful whiskey raid. They would have to capture all of these traders and bring them to justice which (considering the volume of illicit traffic in the west) wouldn’t be easy. The whiskey raid of 1874 was only the first step.
Furthermore, it was the NWMP’s job to gain the trust of the First Nations. After the North-West Resistance and the execution of Louis Riel, the attitudes of both the Canadians and the Métis towards each other were hardened, so this job couldn’t have been easy.
Therefore, I think that the biggest challenges the NWMP had were to protect the people, stop the illicit trading and to gain the trust of First Nations.

  7. Question: What challenges do you predict the NWMP may have faced in bringing about law and order?

    Answer:
I predict that the North West Mounted Police faced many hardships and challenges when bringing about law and order. The largest challenge that the North West Mounted Police would have faced was putting a stop to the illegal liquor trading. This is because so many First Nations had been influenced by it. The traders from the south had changed the First Nations way of life and made them more dependent on whiskey and repeating rifles. The desperate First Nations traded everything they had for these products, leaving them poverty stricken. Moreover, the North West Mounted Police just like the police force of today had to catch thieves and people who broke the law. Back then people stole horses and possessions that the family couldn’t live without, this was a serious problem and the people depended on the North West Mounted Police to put a stop to it. Furthermore, because of previous incidents the people who lived in the North West Territories did not have a good relationship with people from Canada. This might have caused some animosity between the NWMP and the First Nations when they first arrived because the First Nations might not have been willing let them help. Additionally, the North West Mounted Police had the responsibility of being mailmen, doctors (somewhat), firefighters and councillors to all the people in the vast expanse of land. The strains put on the NWMP to get everything done and restore law and order definitely challenged them.

  8. What challenges do you predict the NWPM may face in bringing about law and order?

I believe that the North West Mounted Police faced many challenges bringing about law and order to the west. One of the main challenges that I think they faced was to stop the illegal trading of whiskey mainly between the American’s and the First Nations. This was a big problem because many of the First Nations traded important and valuable items, in return receiving a cup or so of whiskey and a repeating rifle, which led to many avoidable incidents. Another challenge which I predict that the NWMP faced was tracking down the ones who broke the law and punishing them accordingly. This was an important issue to deal with because as previously stated, the trading of whiskey was a main concern, and also the stealing of horses was a frequent occurrence. Lastly, the third challenge that I predict the NWMP may have faced was to create and sustain a close relationship with the First Nations people. This was an important issue because the First Nations people had not be treated the best by the Canadians, and with the creation of “Treaty 7” this was possible with help from the NWMP. Those are three of many challenges that I predict the North West Mounted Police will face in bringing about law and order in the west.

  9. What challenges do you predict the NWPM may face in bringing about law and
    order?

The challenges that the NWMP faced are: 1. To collect customs and to track down illegal traders’. 2.establish posts to house and to protect the people and horses.3. To track down people who broke the law and bring them to justice.

    1. The Americans were trading liquor to the First Nations. This was a big concern to the government and NWMP because it shows the Americans that they can just walk around in Canada and do whatever they want, ( It makes Canada look weak). The Americans and American government might raid Canada and take it over. This was the main reason the NWMP was established. In 1874 the government passed the law about liquor, ( liquor is now forbidden). Later that year the NWMP made their first successful whisky raid, the NWMP arrested 5 whisky traders. A lot of the attempts were unsuccessful but over the years they managed to enforce the whisky trading law.
    2. In 1883-1884 tons of settlers entered the region. As a result crime happened much more often, soon it happened almost everyday. The NWMP duties multiplied, most of the NWMPs time and energy was spent on this.
    3. Horse theft was common it happened almost everyday because of the great number of people that entered. this was extremely hard because NWMP only had 300 men. They established Fort Walsh in 1875. It was near the whisky traders, this area was a major concern of the government and NWMP. Fort Calgary eventually grew into the city of Calgary.

  10. Question:
What challenges do you predict the NWPM may face in bringing about law and order in the North West Territories?
    Answer:
The challenges that I predict the NWMP will face in bringing about law and order in the North West Territories will be with the illegal whiskey traders, the spread out inhabitants of the North West Territories, and the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR).
The illegal whiskey traders were wreaking havoc in the North-West Territories. The illegal whiskey traders were selling whiskey, guns and other unattainable items in Canada, at the time, to the people in the North-West territories. The people of the North-West Territories were trading all their belongings to buy these things, leaving them without the means to buy the things that they really needed. The whiskey traders were also wanted for arrest in the North-West territories because they illegal coming from America to Canada to sell goods that the Canadian government outlawed.
The spread out inhabitants were another problem for the NWMP. This was a problem because it was much for the NWMP to maintain law and order in the North-West territories. The North-West territories at that time took up about three quarters of Canada so that was a lot of space for the NWMP to patrol and take care of.
The building of the CPR railway was yet another problem of maintaining law and order for the NWMP. The CPR railway was a problem for the NWMP because there were many disputes between the First Nations people and the railway workers and it was up to the NWMP to keep these disputed under control until the CPR railway line was complete.
In conclusion the illegal whiskey traders, the spread out inhabitants of the North-West territories, and disputes between the First Nations people and the railway worker were some of the many challenges that the NWMP had to deal with while they were trying to bring law and order to the North-West territories.

  11. What challenges do you predict the NWPM may face in bringing about law and order?

The NWMP forced many challenges over the years. Some of the challenges forced by the NWMP was the daily horse thefts and the illegal trading. Since of the daily horse thefts, the NWMP spent most of their energy and time catching these thieves. The illegal trading between the Americans and First Nations was also a serious problem. The NWMP searched many trade carts and in October 1874, the first whiskey raid was successful. If they don't have trust with the natives, trades and negotiations would be more difficult. They needed to find a way to negotiate with them and gain their confidence. This was resolved with treaty 7. This granted special reserves established for the First Nations. The task of encouraging people to move into the new reserves and assist them in adopting to their way of life was up to the NWMP. As you can see the NWMP has a lot of challenges. They also had to do many public services such as firefighting, doctors, mailmen, policing and much more. This all was packed into the daily lives of the North-West Mountain Police.

  12. What challenges do you predict the NWPM may face in bringing about law and order?

I think that a big challenge the NWMP faced, was the illegal alcohol trading that went on with the First Nations people. It was hard for the First Nations People to stop this because it was what they did and no one ever really told them not to do this. Therefore, for the NWMP they are going to have to stop this. The First Nations and The Americans were trading their goods and supplies for an alcoholic drink called whiskey. This was not a good idea on their part because, i would rather have supplies and goods rather than just one cup of whiskey.

Another challenge that took place was the steeling of the NWMP's horses. The First Nations People just thought it was ok for them to steel their horses. This was NOT a good idea because those horses were the NWMP's way of transportation around and could limit the places they could go.

Those are two very big challenges that i predict the North-West Mounted Police will face in bringing about Law and Order.

  13. Question:
What challenges do you predict the NWPM may face in bringing about law and order?

The NWMP Had their work cut out for them on the spot. The fact is that before they came along there was generally no one to enforce the law so from the beginning they had their first excruciatingly difficult challenge of having to bring in law to people, that by that time were almost convinced that there was no such thing. Before the NWMP where established there where illegal American traders coming in and giving the first nations things like weapons(I.E repeating rifles) or food (I.E Flour) now that is already bad enough but, the Americans brought alcoholic drinks like whiskey in with them. Rather quickly the first nations began to trade their possessions for the whiskey. Now a day’s drinking and driving is BAD. Imagine Back then: A drunken first nation’s person with a bottle of whiskey and a repeating rifle in hand. It might get ugly. Of course they had to find a way to fix this so enter the act of 1874. This was a law that forbade the selling of alcohol. Now that might not work but back then that seemed to do the trick. This law helped them track down criminals and illegal traders. Lastly they had to earn the trust of the first nations so they introduced treaty 7. This did help and the first nations begun to respect the NWMP more. These are the challenges that I live that they had to face.

  14. What challenges do you predict the NWMP may face in bringing about law and order?

    Answer:
The major challenges I think the NWMP may have to face in bringing about law and order is protecting people from the illegal trading. The NWMP had to track down the American traders that were trading liquor as well as ammunition with the First Nations People. Thankfully, in 1876 a law was passed forbidding the import and manufacturing of the liquor so the NWMP would no longer have to deal with this issue. Another challenge that to me was a focal issue was horse stealing in the west. This problem was common because the laws were ignored so the settlers were free to do as they wish. This was an immense job for the NWMP because they had to protect settlers, mostly the Dakota and enforce the laws. One more challenge for the NWMP was that they had to build a positive relationship with the First Nations People along with gaining their trust. It was extremely important to gain trust with the First Nation People so it would be easier to negotiate treaties, like Treaty 7, as well as making reserves. Having to attempt to solve the conflicts between the Canadians and the Métis must have been a demanding job for the NWMP. As a result, the prime challenges the NWMP had to face was to track down the illegal traders, to protect settlers from the people who were stealing horses, and building a relationship with the First Nations People.

  15. What challenges do you predict the NWMP may face in bringing about law and order?

The NWMP faced many challenges bringing about law and order in the North-West Territories. They had many challenges bringing order due to the illegal trading by the First Nations People and the frequent occurrence of horse theft. They provided aid and advice to settlers, they maintained law and order on CPR construction camps, the NWMP also wanted to gain respect and trust from the First Nations People.

The Canadian government enforced a law forbidding the sale, import and manufacture of whiskey in the North-West. Along with the passing of this act came a number of illegal traders who traded with the First Nations People. The First Nations traded their own belongings (i.e. buffalo robes, horses, and furs) in exchange for guns and liquor. There were many attempts to capture illegal traders but not all were successful.
The NWMP wanted to maintain peace, co-operation and order with the First Nations People as well as gain respect and confidence. They were able to negotiated treaties with them such as treaty 7 which had reserves established for First Nations People.

These are some of the many challenges that the NWMP had to face in bringing about law and order.

  16. I belive that the NWMP will face alot of diffrent problems as well as distractions while they are out in the feild.

I think that transportation is one of the most important because the areas that the NWMP had to cover was extreamly large for a group of horse mounted police men. Even though the NWMP had the most efficent way of travel for that time period there can still be many problems with the horses, for example: what if the horse suddenly died or broke an ankle that police man would be stuck without any means of transportation leaving that area of land not controlled.

So yes, I belive that the NWMP had alot of problems leading from transportation to rebeling first nations but even though they had problems they succeded in controlling the land of Canada.
